Description

Sauerkraut casserole brings comfort straight from German kitchens to your dinner table, packed with tangy flavors and hearty ingredients that’ll make your family ask for seconds.

Ingredients

Scale

Proteins:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese

Produce and Seasonings:

  • 1 onion
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Pantry and Base Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces wide egg noodles
  • 2 14-ounce cans sauerkraut
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 10.75-ounce cans tomato soup
  • 1 10.75-ounce can water

Instructions

  1. Warm your oven to 350°F and coat a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Sizzle 2 lbs ground beef in a skillet, adding 1 diced onion, 2 tsp garlic powder, 2 tsp dried parsley, salt and pepper. Cook until meat browns completely.
  3. Spread 2 cans of drained sauerkraut evenly across the bottom of the prepared dish, then sprinkle ¾ cup brown sugar over the top.
  4. Layer 8 oz of cooked wide egg noodles directly on top of the sauerkraut.
  5. Distribute the browned beef mixture evenly across the noodles, covering them completely.
  6. Whisk 2 cans of tomato soup with 1 can of water until smooth and well combined.
  7. Pour the soup mixture gently over the entire casserole, ensuring even coverage.
  8. Scatter 2 cups of shredded Swiss cheese across the surface, creating a complete cheese layer.
  9. Slide the casserole into the 350°F oven and bake for 40 minutes until the cheese melts and edges turn golden.
  10. Remove from oven and rest for 5 minutes to allow flavors to settle before serving.

Notes

  • Drain sauerkraut thoroughly to prevent excess liquid from making the casserole soggy.
  • Select a tangy Swiss cheese for deeper flavor and better melting consistency.
  • Use lean ground beef to reduce greasiness and create a cleaner-tasting dish.
  • For a gluten-free version, swap egg noodles with cauliflower rice or gluten-free pasta alternative.
