Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients:
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheese
- 1 large egg
Supporting Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm milk
- ¼ cup warm water
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
Seasoning and Finishing:
- 2 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs
- 1 tablespoon milk
- Extra cheese for topping
Instructions
- Mix ¼ cup warm water, 1 cup warm milk, 1 tsp sugar, and 2 tsp instant yeast in a large bowl. Allow the mixture to become frothy for 5 minutes.
- Pour 3 ½ cups flour, 1 tsp salt, ¼ cup softened butter, and 1 large egg into the yeast mixture. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic for 6-8 minutes.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, covering it completely. Let the dough rise in a warm spot for 1 hour until it doubles in volume.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Flatten each piece and sprinkle 2 tbsp shredded cheese and 1 tsp chopped herbs in the center.
- Fold the dough over the cheese, sealing the edges. Roll each piece into a round ball, ensuring the cheese stays inside.
- Arrange the dough balls on a lined baking sheet, keeping them slightly apart. Let them rise for 30 minutes until they look puffy.
- Heat your oven to 375F. Brush each bun with 1 tbsp milk and sprinkle extra cheese on top.
- Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes until they turn golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
- Remove from the oven and let the buns cool for 5 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
- Yeast works best between 100-110°F, so check water temperature with a thermometer to ensure perfect activation.
- Kneading develops gluten, which creates a soft, stretchy texture, so take time to work the dough thoroughly.
- Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free spot like near your oven or wrapped in a towel to help it expand consistently.
- For gluten-free version, substitute regular flour with a cup-for-cup gluten-free blend and add xanthan gum for better texture.
