Crack Breakfast Casserole comes together faster than your morning coffee brewing, bringing pure comfort to your breakfast table. This cheesy, hearty dish delivers a morning-saving combination of eggs, bacon, and pure deliciousness that everyone at the table will devour.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein:

  • 1 lb ground breakfast sausage
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

  • 2 cups milk

Seasonings and Garnish:

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ cup chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Cook 1 lb ground breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium heat until no pink remains. Drain grease on paper towels.
  2. Crack 6 large eggs into a mixing bowl and whisk thoroughly.
  3. Pour 2 cups milk into the eggs. Add 1 tsp salt and ½ tsp black pepper. Mix completely.
  4. Coat a 9×13 inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
  5. Distribute 6 slices of cubed white bread across the bottom of the dish.
  6. Scatter the cooked sausage evenly over the bread cubes.
  7. Gently pour the egg mixture across the bread and sausage layer.
  8. Sprinkle 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese over the entire surface.
  9. Distribute ¼ cup chopped green onions across the top of the cheese.
  10. Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.
  11. Remove casserole from refrigerator 30 minutes before baking.
  12. Set oven temperature to 350°F.
  13. Place covered casserole in the oven and bake for 45 minutes.
  14. Remove foil and continue baking for another 15 minutes until the top turns golden brown.
  15. Allow casserole to rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure to drain the sausage thoroughly to prevent a soggy bottom layer in your casserole.
  • Stale bread works best for this recipe, as it absorbs the egg mixture without becoming too mushy.
  • For a gluten-free version, swap regular bread with gluten-free bread cubes and check that your sausage is gluten-free.
  • Prepare this casserole the night before to let flavors meld and save time on busy mornings.
