Main Ingredients:
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cocoa powder
- 2 cups Maltesers
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Supporting Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
Topping Ingredients:
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- 1 cup Maltesers
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and thoroughly grease a 9×13 inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, cream 1 cup softened butter with 1 cup sugar until the mixture becomes pale and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Crack 4 large eggs into the butter mixture, adding them one at a time and mixing thoroughly after each addition.
- Pour 1 teaspoon vanilla extract into the batter and blend completely.
- Sift 1 cup flour, 1 cup cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and ½ teaspoon salt into a separate bowl.
- Gradually incorporate dry ingredients into wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Gently fold 2 cups roughly chopped Maltesers and 1 cup chocolate chips into the batter.
- Transfer batter to prepared pan, spreading evenly with a spatula.
- Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes, checking doneness with a toothpick inserted in the center.
- Remove from oven and let cool in pan for 10 minutes.
- Transfer tray bake to a wire rack and cool completely.
- Heat ¼ cup heavy cream in a small saucepan over medium heat until it simmers.
- Remove cream from heat and add 1 cup chocolate chips, stirring until smooth and glossy.
- Pour ganache over cooled tray bake, spreading evenly with a spatula.
- Arrange 1 cup whole Maltesers on top, gently pressing them into the chocolate.
- Allow tray bake to set for 1 hour before cutting into squares.
Notes
- Chop Maltesers roughly to distribute malt ball pieces and chocolate more evenly throughout the batter.
- Use room temperature eggs and butter for smoother mixing and better cake texture.
- For a gluten-free version, replace regular flour with a cup-for-cup gluten-free baking blend to keep the same consistency.
- Ensure ganache is slightly cooled before pouring to prevent melting the Maltesers on top and maintain their crisp texture.
