Description

Hamburger and potatoes make for a classic comfort meal that brings family together around the dinner table. Packed with hearty flavors and simple ingredients, this dish delivers a satisfying dinner your loved ones will eagerly devour.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein and Starch:

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 34 medium russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

Flavor Enhancers:

  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Creamy and Cheesy Elements:

  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup sour cream

Optional Add-ins:

  • 1 cup frozen peas or green beans
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Crushed crackers or breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F and coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté 1 chopped onion until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add 1½ pounds ground beef to the skillet and cook until completely browned, breaking meat into small crumbles. Drain any excess fat.
  4. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together 10.5 oz cream of mushroom soup, ½ cup milk, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper until smooth.
  5. Spread a single layer of thinly sliced 3-4 russet potatoes across the bottom of the baking dish, covering the entire surface.
  6. Distribute half the cooked beef mixture evenly over the potato layer. Pour half the sauce on top and sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
  7. Create a second layer with remaining potatoes, beef, sauce, and top with another 1 cup of cheese.
  8. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes at 375°F.
  9. Remove foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top turns golden and edges become bubbly.
  10. Allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes before serving to help it set and cool slightly.

Notes

  • Prefer russet potatoes for the best texture and ability to absorb sauce and flavors.
  • Choose lean ground beef to reduce excess grease and create a cleaner-tasting casserole.
  • Grate your own cheese instead of using pre-shredded for a more melted, creamy result.
  • Swap ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based crumbles to make the dish lighter or vegetarian-friendly.
