Description

Hearty ground beef potato casserole brings comfort straight to your dinner table with layers of savory meat and creamy potatoes that blend perfectly. Family members will devour this classic dish that combines simple ingredients into a satisfying meal everyone craves.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein:

  • 1 lb lean ground beef

Produce:

  • 3 cups potatoes
  • 0.5 cup onion

Dairy and Pantry:

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

Instructions

  1. Warm your oven to 350°F and coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Brown 1 lb ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat until no pink remains, about 6 minutes. Drain fat completely.
  3. Whisk 10.5 oz cream of mushroom soup with ¾ cup milk, ½ cup chopped onion, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  4. Create first potato layer using half of the 3 cups thinly sliced potatoes, slightly overlapping pieces across bottom of dish.
  5. Spread half the cooked beef over potato layer, then pour ⅓ of soup mixture across surface.
  6. Repeat layering: remaining potato slices, remaining beef, another ⅓ of soup mixture.
  7. Pour final third of soup mixture over top, ensuring all potato surfaces are covered.
  8. Seal dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake at 350°F for 60 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and test potato tenderness with fork. If not soft, recover and bake 15-20 more minutes.
  10. Sprinkle 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese across surface once potatoes are tender.
  11. Return uncovered dish to oven for 5-10 minutes until cheese melts completely.
  12. Allow casserole to rest 10 minutes before serving to help set and cool slightly.

Notes

  • Slice potatoes uniformly thin to ensure even cooking and consistent texture throughout the casserole.
  • Drain beef completely to prevent excess grease making the dish soggy and heavy.
  • Choose a sharp cheddar cheese for extra flavor depth and better melting properties.
  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey and use low-fat cream of mushroom soup to reduce calories.
