Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 3 medium russet potatoes
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese

Supporting Ingredients:

  • 1 ¼ cups onion
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Cream Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • ¾ cup Greek yogurt
  • 2 ½ tablespoons butter
  • 2 ½ tablespoons gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Brown 2 lbs of ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until completely cooked through. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add 1 ¼ cups chopped onion and 3 minced garlic cloves to the beef. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until onions soften.
  4. Stir 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, and 1 teaspoon paprika into the meat mixture. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Melt 2 ½ tablespoons butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in 2 ½ tablespoons flour to create a roux.
  6. Slowly pour 1 cup milk and ½ cup beef broth into the roux, whisking constantly until the sauce thickens.
  7. Remove sauce from heat and blend in ¾ cup Greek yogurt. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Layer half of the 3 sliced potatoes across the bottom of the baking dish.
  9. Spread half the beef mixture over the potato layer.
  10. Pour half the cream sauce evenly across the beef.
  11. Repeat layering with remaining potatoes, beef, and cream sauce.
  12. Sprinkle 1 cup mozzarella and 1 cup cheddar cheese over the top.
  13. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake at 375°F for 45-50 minutes until potatoes are tender.
  14. Remove foil and continue baking for 10-15 minutes until cheese melts and turns golden.
  15. Allow the casserole to rest 5-10 minutes before serving to help it set and blend flavors.

Notes

  • Use starchy potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold for the best texture and creamy consistency in your casserole.
  • For a leaner version, substitute ground turkey for beef and use low-fat cheese to reduce calories.
  • Always drain excess fat from the ground beef to prevent a greasy final dish and ensure a cleaner flavor profile.
  • Make this casserole ahead of time by assembling and refrigerating up to 24 hours before baking, which can enhance the melding of flavors.
