Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients:
- 1.5 pounds (680 grams) ground beef
- ½ cup (120 milliliters) breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
Supporting Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Finishing Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1 cup (240 milliliters) beef broth
- ½ cup (120 milliliters) heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley
Instructions
- In a spacious mixing bowl, combine 1 pound ground beef, ½ cup breadcrumbs, 1 beaten egg, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper. Blend ingredients thoroughly with your hands until well incorporated.
- Shape the meat mixture into 4 uniform oval patties, each approximately ½-inch thick. Ensure the edges are smooth and compact.
- Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat (375°F). Carefully place patties in the skillet and sear for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. Transfer browned patties to a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In the same skillet, melt 3 tablespoons butter. Add 1 diced medium onion and 2 minced garlic cloves. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until onions become translucent.
- Sprinkle 3 tablespoons flour over the onion mixture. Stir continuously for 1 minute to create a roux that eliminates raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour 1 cup beef broth and ½ cup heavy cream into the skillet. Whisk constantly to prevent lumps and create a smooth sauce.
- Simmer the gravy for 4-5 minutes until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Pour the hot gravy evenly over the hamburger steaks in the baking dish. Cover tightly with aluminum foil.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes. The internal temperature of the steaks should reach 160°F.
- Remove from oven and let the dish rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
- Ensure ground beef isn’t too lean, as fat provides flavor and keeps the hamburger steaks juicy during baking.
- Let patties rest at room temperature for 15 minutes before searing to help them cook evenly and prevent tough texture.
- Whisk gravy constantly while adding broth to prevent lumps and achieve a smooth, silky consistency.
- For a gluten-free version, swap breadcrumbs with crushed pork rinds and use cornstarch instead of flour in the gravy.
