Bread and Dairy:
- 12 slices of thick-cut Texas toast
- 1 cup whole milk
- 8 tablespoons butter
Seasonings:
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon coarse salt
- ½ teaspoon mustard powder
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375F and prepare a 9×13 inch baking pan for the casserole.
- Brown 1 lb ground pork sausage in a pan over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes, breaking it into small crumbles.
- Drain the sausage grease and set the meat aside on a paper towel.
- Melt 1 tablespoon butter in the same pan over medium heat.
- Whisk 10 eggs with ¼ cup milk, ¼ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper in a separate bowl.
- Scramble the egg mixture in the pan until just barely set, then remove from heat.
- Layer 6 slices of Texas toast across the bottom of the baking pan.
- Place 1 slice of American cheese on top of each bread slice.
- Spread the cooked sausage and scrambled eggs evenly across the bread layer.
- Add another slice of American cheese over the sausage and eggs.
- Mix the remaining 8 eggs with ¾ cup milk and ½ teaspoon mustard powder in a bowl.
- Pour the egg mixture carefully over the entire casserole, ensuring it soaks through all layers.
- Top with the remaining 6 slices of Texas toast.
- Melt the remaining 3 tablespoons butter and brush lightly over the top bread layer.
- Cover the pan with foil and bake at 375F for 20 minutes.
- Remove the foil and continue baking for another 20 minutes until the top turns golden brown.
Notes
- Swap out pork sausage for turkey or chicken sausage to create a leaner breakfast option.
- Let the egg mixture sit for 10 minutes before baking to help the bread absorb more liquid and create a richer texture.
- For a gluten-free version, replace Texas toast with gluten-free bread slices and ensure your cheese is certified gluten-free.
- Prep this casserole the night before and refrigerate, which allows flavors to meld and makes morning cooking easier.
