Ingredients
Scale
Meat:
- 1 lb pork sausage or ground pork
Biscuits:
- 2 tubes (16 oz each) jumbo butter-flavored biscuits
Seasonings and Additions:
- 2 cans (15 oz each) country sausage gravy
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13 inch casserole dish thoroughly with cooking spray or butter.
- Quarter each biscuit from 2 tubes (16 oz each) into four equal pieces.
- Spread one tube’s worth of quartered biscuits across the bottom of the dish. Bake for 12-15 minutes until they are mostly cooked through.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook 1 lb pork sausage, breaking it into small crumbles as it browns.
- Drain excess grease from the sausage using a slotted spoon.
- Distribute the cooked sausage evenly across the partially baked biscuit layer.
- Heat 2 cans (15 oz each) of country sausage gravy in the same skillet over medium heat until warm.
- Pour the heated gravy uniformly over the sausage layer.
- Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper across the gravy.
- Arrange remaining quartered biscuits in a single layer on top of the casserole.
- Bake uncovered at 375°F for 10 minutes.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and continue baking for another 15 minutes.
- Remove from oven and brush 3 tablespoons of melted butter over the top biscuits.
- Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Drain sausage thoroughly to prevent a greasy casserole and ensure crisp biscuit texture.
- Experiment with different sausage types like spicy Italian or sage-flavored for varied flavor profiles.
- Use buttermilk biscuits for extra tenderness and a slightly tangy undertone in the dish.
- Prep this casserole ahead and refrigerate overnight, allowing flavors to meld before baking.
